General Griffin A. Stedman, Jr. was a native of Hartford, Connecticut and graduate of Trinity College. He enlisted on 22 June 1861 and was mustered-in a Captain, Company I, 5th Connecticut Infantry, on 22 July 1861. He later joined the 11th Connecticut Infantry and rose to the rank of Brevet Brigadier General. He was mortally wounded during a skirmish after the second battle at Petersburg. This collection contains a photograph, handwritten verses and two printed copies penned by Lydia Sigourney, and printed verses by Arthur Elwell Jenks. Stedman is buried at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Hartford. Correspondence from Stedman during the war may be found among the manuscript collections.
